Collection: Preparation with the automatic coffee machine

Coffee for fully automatic machines: aromatic, balanced, and roasted in Freiburg

Good coffee from a fully automatic machine starts with the right beans. Roast level, origin, and composition determine whether the coffee ends up in your cup as bold and chocolatey, pleasantly sweet, or somewhat fruitier. In our coffee roastery in Freiburg, we carefully select our raw coffees, roast them gently, and tailor our roast profiles to the character of each bean.

Both dark espresso roasts and balanced medium roasts are suitable for fully automatic coffee machines. While darker coffees generally offer bold notes of chocolate, nuts, and spices with little perceptible acidity, medium roasts bring more sweetness, fruit, and complexity to the cup.

At Schwarzwild, you will therefore find coffee beans for your fully automatic machine to suit a wide range of tastes – from bold espressos and cappuccinos to aromatic Café Crème.

Which roast level is suitable for a fully automatic coffee machine?

The ideal roast level depends primarily on how you prefer to drink your coffee.

Dark espresso roasts are particularly suitable for espresso, cappuccino, latte macchiato, and other milk-based drinks. They provide plenty of body, chocolatey and nutty aromas, and a comparatively low perceptible acidity. Especially in drinks with milk, these bolder flavor notes remain well-defined.

Medium roasts, on the other hand, often offer more aromatic complexity. Alongside chocolate and caramel, sweet and fruity notes can also stand out more clearly here. This makes them exciting for café crème, Americano, or espresso if you prefer a more vibrant and nuanced cup profile.

Ultimately, the decisive factor is less a question of which roast level is fundamentally best for a fully automatic machine, but rather which flavor profile you are looking for.

Medium roast sampler pack: fruity and complex

Looking to go beyond classic dark espresso flavors with your fully automatic coffee machine? Then our medium roast espresso sampler pack is a great way to discover different flavor profiles.

Inside the pack, you'll find Wilde Hilde, Colombia Casa Verde, and Brazil Capim Branco. Compared to our darker espresso blends, these medium roasts offer more aromatic complexity and a slightly more perceptible acidity. They also feature light fruit notes along with chocolatey, caramelly, and sweet nuances.

This pack is therefore perfect for you if you prefer your coffee from a fully automatic machine to be fruitier, livelier, and more nuanced.

Here, too, acidity does not automatically mean that a coffee tastes unpleasantly sour. Rather, well-integrated fruit acidity can add freshness and complexity to the coffee – much like with other high-quality natural products.

This allows you to try out which profile you like best in your automatic machine and see how much different roast levels and raw coffees influence the taste.

Wilde Hilde – sweet, chocolatey and slightly fruity

It doesn't always have to be a dark espresso roast for your fully automatic coffee machine. Our Wilde Hilde shows just how versatile a medium roast can be.

This blend consists of 100% Arabica from Brazil and El Salvador. Due to the medium roast profile, chocolatey and sweet aromas take center stage, complemented by a pleasant, light fruit note.

This makes Wilde Hilde ideal if you are looking for a coffee that is a bit more refined and aromatically complex than our dark espresso blends.

In a fully automatic machine, it is suitable for both espresso and a longer coffee or café crème. It is especially exciting for anyone who enjoys chocolate and sweetness, but is also looking for a bit more fruit and vibrancy in the cup.

Höllentäler – bold, spicy, and low in acidity

Do you like your coffee particularly intense? Then the Höllentäler is the right choice for you. This blend combines 60% Arabica with 40% Robusta and is dark roasted.

This creates a full-bodied espresso with strong roasted aromas and comparatively little perceptible acidity. In terms of flavor, you can expect hazelnut, chocolate, and a pleasant spiciness.

The higher Robusta content provides extra body and makes the Höllentäler particularly interesting for espresso and milk-based drinks from a fully automatic machine.

Especially with cappuccino and latte macchiato, its intense cup profile holds up well against the milk. If you find many coffees from fully automatic machines too mild, the Höllentäler is an exciting alternative.

Schwarzwild Original – bold, chocolatey, and nutty

Our Schwarzwild Original is a classic espresso blend of 70% Arabica and 30% Robusta. The dark roast combines South American sweetness with a powerful body and a velvety texture.

In terms of taste, hazelnut, chocolate, and spicy notes are at the forefront. At the same time, the Robusta content supports a strong body and a dense crema.

This makes Schwarzwild Original a versatile choice for fully automatic coffee machines. It works just as well pure as an espresso as it does as a Café Crème and forms a strong base for cappuccino or latte macchiato.

If you are looking for an uncomplicated, full-bodied coffee with classic espresso aromas, Schwarzwild Original is a great starting point.

How to correctly adjust your fully automatic coffee machine: grind size, strength, and temperature

Even high-quality coffee beans can only develop their full aroma if the fully automatic machine is adjusted correctly. In this process, grind size, coffee amount, water volume, and brewing temperature all play a role together.

If your coffee runs through very quickly and tastes thin, watery, or unpleasantly sour, a slightly finer grind size may help. If it tastes bitter, dry, or very intense, a coarser setting may be useful.

Important: On many fully automatic machines, only change the grind size while the grinder is running and always adjust the setting in small increments. Please also refer to your device's manual.

Water volume also significantly influences the taste. A good coffee does not automatically become better just because more water runs through the same amount of coffee grounds. For a longer coffee, it can therefore be useful to experiment with the beverage volume and coffee strength.

With our dark espresso roasts, you can also start with a slightly lower brewing temperature. For medium roasts, the temperature can often be slightly higher. The deciding factor remains the result in the cup.

Whenever possible, change only one setting at a time. This allows you to track which adjustment actually improves your coffee.

Gentle roasting in our Freiburg coffee roastery

Good coffee begins with selecting the right green coffees. In our roastery in Freiburg, we carefully pay attention to the origin, processing, and flavor profile of the beans before they are crafted into our espresso and coffee roasts.

Through a gentle and controlled roasting process, chocolatey, nutty, caramelly, spicy, or fruity aromas develop, depending on the coffee. The focus is not on roasting as dark as possible, but rather on a balanced interplay of body, sweetness, aroma, and intensity.

From the selection of the green coffee to the final packaging, we treat coffee as a high-quality natural product. This results in coffees that are full of character and balanced in the cup, even when prepared in fully automatic machines.

For Freiburg and the region, this means: artisanally roasted coffee from a local coffee roastery – with a focus on quality, taste, and careful processing.
